Will QuickSet cure in a freezer?

Postby BarryA » Tue Aug 09, 2016 10:25 pm

Hi,

I just purchased some QuickSet so I can create a mould of a frozen bait fish. To keep the bait hard while the QuickSet cures I was planning on freezing the bait, mount it vertically in the mould box, pour the QuickSet then put everything in the freezer in order to keep the bait hard while curing the mould.

Will the QuickSet cure in the freezer?

Thx,

Barry

Yes it will, not as quickly as at room temp, but it will cure overnight. Quickset has the lowest tear strength of all the silicones, so be careful when twisting and bending the mold, especially where you've already cut it.
good luck!

Thanks for the heads up, Larry. I'll need to be extra careful when making the master out of a single piece mould, but then will hopefully avoid the issue once I make the two piece production mould. I was going to follow the videos I've seen where the bait is cast on its end then cut an X on the end to access the bait.

I'm attempting to replicate a choked herring for use in salmon fishing up here in the Pacific NW. I'll share some photos here if it turns out.

Another option for rubber would be the High Strength 1. It has a much higher tear strength for cutting the original out and its almost as hard as the QuickSet when you are ready to make a two piece production mold.

FYI, placing the quickset in the freezer appeared to pause the curing process. After 24 hours the quickset was still in liquid form so I let it finish curing at room temp and it was hard after another 8 hours. Once cured I refroze the whole thing to harden the bait inside so it could be extracted with minimal mess.

I've now cast a master out of RC3 and it looks great.

Thx,

I'm glad it worked out! Forgot to mention, if you over catalyze the rubber your curing time in the freezer will improve. However, I would not do it with quick set, as Mike mentioned, due to tearing, it's best to use high strength 1.
Hope you post a pic of your final product!
