Conservation run amock

Postby Cal » Fri May 20, 2016 6:47 am

Larry,

What is your opinion about NOAA closing federal red snapper season for 2016? They're basing the closure not on the actual biomass of red snapper, which everyone agrees is at population levels not seen in a century, but by estimated catch rates from 2015. Their estimates project that the recreational quota was exceeded by more than double.

Thank GOD for state waters!

Everybody I know that's got anything to do with the issue feels the same way as you do. Seems totally crazy. Might be another case of cranius uprectumitis on part of fish managers .

I have a friend who is a charter captain. He was actually complaining that it's impossible to drift for kingfish because the snapper are so thick that they actually come up and take the ribbonfish. Steve told me that one trip he tried using blue runners for bait to mitigate this, and he was getting 15 pound snapper stealing the durn things.

This is an example of the pointy heads asking, "who you gonna believe? Me or your lyin' eyes?"
