Mold-making snafu

Postby Cal » Wed Nov 19, 2014 8:59 am

While casting the mold for a curly-tail shad that I've been working on, I forgot to put tape over the tale to prevent the RTV from flowing over it and closing it up. I haven't pulled the mold because I don't know what is going to happen. Have I ruined the mold? How do I extract the blank from the silicone brick without messing up the mold? Will I be able to cast the tail, or have I kissed the baboon on this one?

Not exactly clear on what your problem is, but it sounds like you're making a squish type mold. If so, you might want to try cutting a slit with an exacto knife where you intended the tape to be. Other than that, there might be other cures involving a re-do of the tail section or even a separate mold for the tail.
good luck, send a pic if you can.

I ended up cutting the tail section off and recasting that section. Once I figure out how to post a pic, I'll show you the final product.
