What would cause this?

Postby Questor » Fri Jun 29, 2007 11:56 am

I've been fishing a 300 acre mesotrophic Minnesota lake since last year. Last year and up to a week ago the water was quite clear-- clear enough to go snorkeling in. Now it so murky I can hardly see bottom in two feet of water. It doesn't look like algae bloom. It looks more like sediment. Color is brown.

Do you have any idea of what could cause this?

Hi Q,
The culprit is a combination of sunshine, and, quite likely, phosphates and nitrogen!
The exact same phenomenon occurred in my backyard pond over the same period.
Not all algae is green.
It'll get clear again in the fall.
best,
