Lake St Clair Guide Recommendation

Postby jerkbait » Sun Dec 15, 2013 5:21 pm

Hey Larry or anyone else,
Any recommendations for a state side guide for lake st clair? There will be 2-3 of uf and we are hoping to get some casting or jigging in for muskie for a full day, any recommendations?

I did some looking at these, anyone have experiences?

There are quite a few options obviously.

Fins and Grins Charter services ... I've personally used these guys and they are phenom! Also recommended them to friends of mine and they called me and thanked me for the recommendation. Their comment was that they were "a first class guide operation and extremely knowledgable" ... it probably helped that everyone of the 5 caught multiple fish.

http://www.finsandgrinsmuskiecharters.com/ Both Jason and Matthew are awesome as I've fished with them both. They cast and troll and have big spacious boats for each specific purpose. I honestly don't know anything about the others but just giving you my personal experience of the guys I've used and really like.

When are you planning on going?

Good luck and have fun in your search.

I put my 2 cents in for Gerry Gostenik, full-time Lake St. Clair guide for 15 years. He's a great guy, and very professional.

Thanks for the recommendations, we've booked a day trip with bondy in august.

My other question is that we usually do a September trip in no. Wisconsin for muskie, we'd like to switch it up and fish a lake with a bit higher % of larger class fish, is lake st clair doable with 14-18' boats? Or do we need the larger 20'+ boats to safely be on the lake for a week?

Also, is there a location on the lake which kind of gives you that "northwoods or wilderness" type feel?

Thanks in advance for your input.

I'm not a St. Clair expert but from my experience I would consider it big water in which there are times a 12' boat is absolutely fine and others where you wouldn't want to be out there in a 24'er. I've also experienced it change very quickly. I've taken my RiverRocket (inboard jet ... really made for shallow rivers) which is 18.5" out there in 2.5-3' rollers and was fine bobbing up and down but not something I'd recommend doing daily. Its big water and the winds can really make it difficult depending on the direction and where you intend to fish.

As far as a northwoods or wilderness feel ... I've never seen an area that would give you any such feeling but I've seen a lot that would give you the suburban Detroit feeling! Especially some of the launches closer to downtown. Probably not the "feeling" you are looking for.

Give us a report after your trip with bondy this summer. Would love to know how you did.

There's no better guide on LSC for jigging muskies than Jon Bondy so you made a great choice. The only problem is that you're going in August & if you want to jig there's not much of a jig bite then as most of the big muskies are in mid-lake feeding on the shad so I'm sure Jon will have you guys casting for them.

As for using a 14'-18' boat on LSC you can do it but you need to pick your days according to the weather. I fish LSC out a a 14'5" tiller with a 25 HP. You need to launch near where you plan to fish so in case something comes up you can get off the water quick. If it get's too windy you can always fish the channels of the St. Clair River. If fishing the Michigan side you need to watch out for the drunken pleasure boaters as they don't look out for the little guy.
