Personally, I think what a lure does is most often more important than what color it is or even what it looks like. All of the things mentioned regarding lure qualities are factors. Extremely aggressive or unpressured fish often respond best to sound. Often larger fish in pressured water are not interested in really loud rattling lures.
The stuff my friend Doug Hannon has written about lures attracting versus triggering qualities is pretty good reading. Buck Perry in his book Spoonplugging has some very interesting and valid views on the subject as well.
In fishing there are very, very few hard, fast rules. However, the right lure in the wrong place will never get bit.
You always have to let the fish decide, and you must determine whether the issue is more weighted toward finding them, or fooling them.
