Questions about Making Your Own Lures

Through wire

Postby Tarponchaser305 » Tue Oct 24, 2017 2:54 pm

I am new to this and planning on making some lures for Tarpon. My question is what type of wire would you use for through construction? I have heard of guys using brass/copper. Not sure this will hold up in salt and large fish. Any help would be greatly appreciated

The brass wire found on the Makelure.com site is what I use and have never had any issues at all. reason for brass is that it allows for minute tweaks up, down or left/right on the nose connection to tune your lure. Once you've got it totally dialed it you can use stainless wire if you prefer.

Larry,

Thank you so much for your help and replying so quickly.

What are your thoughts on the new new inline single hooks for hard lures?

Thank you Larry!

Essentially I am looking to make a large Twitch Bait similiar to a Mirrolure/Bagley Mullet.

My plan is to

1- Make a two part mold out of synthetic Clay. For the mold I will use High Strength #2
2- Create a through wire system to lay inside the two piece mold ( line catcher, belly hook, tail hook) Based on your advice I will use the Brass Wire provided by makealure. As I want this lure to be heavy, I will add lead weights directly onto the through wire.
3- Cast Lure with RC-3 Black. Black is the color I am going for
4- Sand then coat the lure with Alum UV

As I am looking for this lure to sink - do you think it is necessary to add micro balloons?
When waiting lures like this do you want the weight forward or aft of the belly hook?
What do you think of the new inline hooks by VMC/OWner? In my limited experience they seem to not let go once on but do not do as well at hooking as tradtional trebles.

Any other insite would be incredibly helpful.

Thank you in advance for your kindness.

it sounds like you are on the right track. No micro balloons should be needed~
good luck with the project!
