Questions about Making Your Own Lures

Metal versus Plastic bill

Postby Bob Daly » Thu Jan 12, 2017 1:46 pm

HI Larry: Just back from my best La Zona trip to date. I talked to the guys and not a problem for you to fish the lake on the other side of the dam. A question on bills. Was able to get some Rapala Super Shad Rads with metal bills which are not available in the USA. I have not tried them. Would you expect the action to be different than those available here which have the plastic bills?

The lip design for that lure evolved from the metal one used in the old and venerable Pike Minnow made by Creek Chub.
It's a super stable design regardless of material. As long as the metal is not so soft it deforms easily, it has in my opinion the distinct advantage of being able to "tune" it to achieve both different movement and different running depth of the lure.
Either can be tuned for right or left adjustments by bending eye your line is attached to.
