In search of the right resin/plastic for lathe use

Postby Steve4hire » Fri Dec 04, 2015 3:43 pm

Hi guys,
I've had pretty good results making some knock-off trolling lures for tuna and other offshore species. That was a good way to learn some of what goes on working with the clear resins.
I'd like to start making my own from scratch so I'm looking for something I can pour into a cylinder shape mold and then bring to a wood lathe to shape. The idea here is to get a super smooth master plug that can be used to make the molds for pouring the clear resin. Is there anything that can be sanded and polished out without too much fuss?
I already have a pressure pot and vacuume chamber if I need it.

I've used many materials for the purpose you are proposing, but the easiest for me has been using either a fine grained wood or alumilite resin with lots of microballoons (10% by weight). Once I've got the shape and smoothed it with 400 grit abrasive I put a coat or two of epoxy finish on it. I've also had good results using several coats of car wax and polishing the dickens out of the piece while turning it in the lathe at a couple thousand rpms.
good luck,
