49-Wire and crimp size for River2Sea Whiggley

Postby Badger1992 » Tue Dec 30, 2014 9:11 am

I made some new leaders for my River2Sea Whiggleys using a heavier hook, an Owner 3/0 ST-66. Problem is, I only had 175# AFW 49-Strand available, and the crimps are too large to allow the hook to sit flush to the lure body, so the hook dangles more than the factory model.

What size 49-Strand does the production model use? I assume the corresponding size crimp will fit into the lure body, as does the factory model.

Thanks!

I'm pretty sure it's 90# with the smallest crimp that will work. I often use 150 mono and tie a three turn nail or uni knot to the split ring which also results in a dangling hook, but it works fine. Another option is to use nylon coated wire and use the twist melt method rather than a crimp.
