progress on my rat lure

My original intention was to reproduce one of these : http://i273.photobucket.com/albums/jj23 ... 44b031.jpg

Then I came across a jointed rat lure, but the thing was massive. I wanted something I could stealth into some grass flats a little easier.

I tried to combine the design idea. I found the size of the megabass rat to be favorable, but I wanted a hinge for extra action. This is what I cam up with. Swims like a champ!! Can't wait to catch a few whoppers on it. Next one I make and test gets molded easy reproduction now that all of my specs are worked out. Lure weighs just barely over an ounce.

That looks sweet Rhett! Would love to see some video of it in the water. Good luck with it.

I've continued to tinker with a soft top water buzz mouse that has turned into more of a twitching mouse. I should say I've had the most success by cutting off the two front legs and then instead of buzzing it, I twitch it with short strokes and the head pops forward and up out of the water and then it settles back down. Almost like walking the dog but it simply pops forward with the legs and tail dancing the whole time. Posted a new pic on the lure gallery ... http://www.makelure.com/Lures.cfm

Let us know how you do on your jointed rat.
Mike

Nice looking lure Rhett!
I think SPRO had their new rat lure win a category at this most recent iCast. The tail is sort of jointed too, here's a video of it:

Try and get some video of it in the water, if you can, Rhett.

Thanks for sharing!

Not where I can get to a lure right now, but ........ there is a very simple way to make a great snake lure. I will try to post it this weekend if I remember. You could take it from there and take a good idea (not mine) and make it a great idea.

Catch any fish on the new Rat yet?

I've caught one on it so far but haven't fished it too seriously yet. Saving a night venture for tomorrow night. Hoping for a monster.

Any time, I love to see others do well.

Just like taking people fishing, it gives me great pleasure to see them catch more and bigger fish then they ever have, even if I have to set in the background running the boat.

Had a little inspiration at the pond the other day when a muskrat kept harassing my fishing hole , although the rat probably felt like I was harassing his home- I digress- watching him swim just below the surface made think, "Hey musk rats dive a lot!". I wanted to make a slow floater/wake that'll swim just below the surface. The action came out great on it. The coolest part is that even though it swims about 2 inches below the surface, it still creates a surface wake. Allow it to fully rise to the surface, hold the rod tip up and you have a surface wake. Very cool. I'm happy with the action on it. I really want to see if there will be a major difference between a surface vs a subsurface bite w/ a rat.
Still in the prototyping stages, and I normally wouldn't make finished lures yet, but I plan on fishing them. I think testing patterns is important too!
Oh yeah and I took the walking mouse out for a while last night and caught nice fish. Not a monster, but man do I love using that lure.
