Questions about Making Your Own Lures

Whiggley

Postby Bloodhound317 » Sat Jul 12, 2014 3:46 pm

Larry, I've made 9" whiggley, and put a hook through it like I would a worm, and on my test run all it would do is go in a circle on the retrieve. I have not added eyes, nor any weight to it, and the head of the whiggley is conical in shape. I've read in older post where guys have put weight in the belly of the whiggley. Could the reason the whiggley is not running correctly is, I have no weight, or the wrong hook position? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

If everything is lined up and balanced properly and the rubber is the right stiffness, no weight should be needed to keep it upright, but weight in the belly will always make the lure more stable.
keep tweeking!

Thanks, since I'm new at lure making, would the softnes or hardness added to the Alumisol make it more balanced? I've seen on your videos where you just used Alumisol without the softness or hardness added. This might be a silly question but adding the hardness to the Alumisol make the the bait harder, and the same with the softness? Thanks for your help.

Does not anything for balance ... simply changes the hardness of the soft plastic. Often times people add hardener to the head of a lure where the hook may go through to add durability and softener to another batch to pour the rest of the lure to add flexibility which may give a particular bait more action.

You can have the shape just right but if the alumisol is too stiff the lure may not wiggle, or may spin.

Bloodhound: What kind of hook were you rigging whiggley with?

I believe it was a 5/0 hook, and I rigged it Texas style like on a worm.

Rhett, I noticed in a older post you make your whiggley 1.5cm thick and 3cm tall, with a 4:1 Alumisol to softener. I might try your dimensions and make a new master. The YouTube video of your whiggley looks and swims great.
