Alumifoam Cure Time

Postby Dman75 » Fri Jun 27, 2014 6:23 am

Do I need to let the Alumifoam sit for a certain period of time after taking it out of the mold? I coated a bait with epoxy shortly after demolding it and got alot of air bubbles in the finish. Is the foam "off gassing" for a period of time?

Thanks

yes, I would suggest letting it really harden up before you epoxy it. you are exactly correct.

The other potential issue if just allowing it to cure longer doesn't fix it is IF your surface isn't completely smooth and there are open cells of the foam showing, the epoxy will flow into those cells and push the air out which then gives you a bunch of air in your epoxy that is trying to float to the surface and pop. If this is the case, you might have to seal those open cells before coating. I've even used something as simple as spackel you'd use to fill in a nail hole in dry wall.
