Whopper Plopper Issues

Postby luccio » Sun May 05, 2013 5:07 pm

Hi Larry and/or Mike.

I made a whopper plopper following step by step the tutorial videos.
I tried it. The result is that my whopper plopper remains lying on its side with the eye under the belly (the central eye ) that remains above the surface of the water (even when I add the splitring and the treble hook ).
How do I have the eye belly under the surface?
I have to add few weight to balance the body of the whopper plopper?
If so, in which part of the body I have to add weight?
How much weight do I have to add approximately?
Thank you in advance.

My best guess is that the out skin is not of even thickness so it's heavier on one side.
best,

Thank you,Larry.

I'm planning to make the body in two halves of the same thickness, put the steel wireform through, glue the two halves and after it is dried put inside the foam.
This should solve the issue (I hope ).
I just have a afraid : the foam's pressure.
Could the foam's pressure unglue the two halves body?
( I'd use two component epoxy glue to glue the two halves )

What do you think about ?

When you spin it just make sure it ends up with the hook hanger down at the end of your spin cycle.
I think making two halves is overcomplicating the procedure.
Yes, it is likely the foam would push the glue seam apart, unless you put it back in the mold before you foamed it.
good luck,

Yeah, I agree with Larry ... if you put it back in the mold to support it, even clamp it, you will have a better chance of it not splitting your glue line. The trouble with the glue line is that it seems like a lot of post clean up to me (I try to do as little to my bait as possible when it comes out of the mold ... few touches and processes as possible). The other thing is if you can give the pour an adequate bleeder hole ... hole in which the foam can escape as well as not over fill it, it should not build enough pressure to blow your lure apart. You can always add a little more but pouring too much in at one time can prove to be a detriment.

Thank you Larry and Mike.

Maybe I solved the issues.
I make a new mold with a diameter of 3mm smaller than the mold that I have already.
In this mold I insert the wireform and from top (vertically) I pour inside the foam.
After the foam has dried, I insert the piece of foam with the wireform inside in the mold with the larger diameter.
Then I pour the resin (alumilite white) in the space between the foam and the edge of the mold , pouring up to the brim of the mold.
In this way the body of the bait will have the part outside made with a layer/skin of hard resin mixed with microspheres (layer/skin with a thickness of 3 mm) and the part inside made with the core of foam (with the wireform).

Practically, the body will look like a corn dog ( if you see the circular section )

Do you like it? Will be balanced the body ?

Just a curiosity: how many degrees (C° or F°) can resist the foam 610 ?
