My First Top Water

Postby rippinlips » Thu Mar 21, 2013 1:58 pm

I have attached a picture of my first wire through top water. I molded it from a Zara Spook Jr. I tried using the Clear Cure Goo Hyrdro as a clear coat. No Bueno. It doesn't adhere to the plastic well and it ended up giving the lure a textured feel. I ended up buying the Solarez UV stuff and will be dipping my first few tonight. I added the pearlescent Alumidust to the mold and this first run ended up having a really cool shiny finish. Next purchase will be an airbrush to add some details, but I have had some great success down at Lake Powell throwing pearl white topwaters such as these. I tried it out in the bathtub and I can get the same walk the dog action that the real Spook has. I'm pumped because every one of these I make saves me about $6.

If you use the solarez, make sure you dip it and then let it drip for 5 minutes or so. Pinch off any sag or drip on the bottom with a paper towel and let it set for 30 seconds more. Then, if no additional drips show, you are ready to set. This should give you a glass smooth finish. For Muskie tough finish, once the first coat is cured, do this a second time.

Good luck and I love the spook.
I think my bucket list has a hole in the bottom!

Did you use the super plastic and microballons? How many grams does your bait weigh? I'm assuming that you added weight to the rear of the bait to get it to zig zag. If so,how much weight did you add and where was your placement of the weight?

Yep. That's gonna rip some lips that's for sure.

Hey Lucky Stick, I did use the super plastic with Microballoons. 2 oz (1oz of A, 1oz of B) of plastic mixed with 1.75 oz of microballons. I did not add any weight to the back of the bait. It may not show up great in the picture but I used one size smaller treble hook in the front which allows the nose to float higher than the tail. It may not have the exact same action, but from I could see, there were no issues getting it to "Walk the Dog".

Anglinarcher--thanks for the tips. I will post some more pictures after I dip a couple this weekend.
