Questions about Making Your Own Lures

Topics to research

Postby lucky stick » Tue Jan 22, 2013 2:58 pm

Hello all.

I am no expert in the areas of science, physics, or math. I do know that through the listed disciplines I can explain and understand how a bait works under water. I want to dig a little deeper into the higher level concepts to help me better understand how to get my baits to run true, and do the things I want them to do. I have begun researching, learning, and refreshing on the following topics: density, buoyancy, specific gravity, volume displacement, and center of mass.

I am hoping that you guys could compile a list of other relevant science, math, physics "words" for me to research.

Thanks in advance.

Lucky, you might indeed become the first fishing lure engineer. :P

Another buzz phrase that will help you will be "center of pressure". Perhaps another phrase would be Hydrodynamic Flutter.

Keep in mind that knowledge of these phrases is not required to make great lures, but, as they say, you asked for it.

In fact, most calcs done on air flow assume it is a non-compressible fluid until the air
speed reaches about 2/3 the speed of sound.

kite. airplane. glider.
all of the different terms certainly apply, the devil is that they are ALL variables so educated trial and error is the rule. But, ultimately the fish has to make the ultimate decision and introducing that into the process compounds the variability beyond calculation.
have fun!
