Billed crankbait info need

Postby Rimara0411 » Sat Jun 16, 2012 10:54 pm

I am looking for all the information i can find to create a hard bodied crank bait with a bill. I am needing the info on how to create the mold correctly and set up the pour. Any information or videos available would be greatly appreciated.

Two piece molds are typically recommended and offer better access to setting the lip in place as well as through wire if that is what you are going to use. Look at the Two Piece Mold of the Swim Whiz on the far right hand side of the screen in the How To section for a step by step tutorial.

This is exactly what I just created. Basically I created 4 molds (an inner and outer for both halves) and cast them. Super glued them together, sanded smooth, air brushed paint or sharpies work nice for the kids, cleared with Devcon 2-ton epoxy. They look great! Watch the tutorial it was helpful. But only half seem to swim/work right. How is your project coming?

Sounds like you are making hollow lures? This is tricky. I suggest your mold be made of Alumilite Quick Set. It is harder, stiffer, and it holds its shape better for thin and exacting shapes.

Next, Super Glue is pretty tough to get a proper alignment to hold on lures like that. I have played some with the style of lure construction I think you are doing, but I find that actually using a mold to maintain perfect lure part alignment during gluing is required.

Have you considered making a hollow shell by rotomolding like Larry shows in is DVD, then filling with Alumilite 610 foam? It works very well.
I think my bucket list has a hole in the bottom!
