Can I use it ?

Postby luccio » Tue Jun 05, 2012 10:07 am

Hi,Larry !!!!

Instead of Flex80 (I live in Italy and I can't find it here) can I use this product : Castable polyurethane rubber (available in 70 shore and in 90 shore ) ?
Can I color the castable polyurethane rubber as the same way of the Flex80 (using the dyes ) ?

Yes it should work. Make sure to look at the open time (they may call it work time) and demold time. Some polyurethanes are extremely slow curing. Pay attention to the mix ratio as well ... maybe by volume, maybe by weight. Low heat ... 130F normally helps polyurethane cure if it is slow or not curing good for you.

Hi,Mike !!!

Here are the specifications apply to both the rubber 70 shore and 90 shore

TECHNICAL

Before Catalysis
Appearance component A thick liquid beige
Appearance component B: transparent thick liquid
Specific gravity A + B: 1.200 kg. / Lt.
Viscosity A + B: 2200 CpS
Mixing ratio: 1:1 by weight

During Catalysis
Workability time (pot life): 30-35 minutes
Demoulding time: 24 hours
Full cure: 72 hours
It is recommended to avoid catalysis of the product at temperatures above +30 ° C

After the Catalysis
Appearance: beige rubber elastic
Tear strength: 43 N / mm (very high)
Elongation at break: 600% (high)
Linear shrinkage after 5 days. (ISO 4823): <0.1%

For coloring the product can I use powder pigments or aniline greases, adding the dye to the first component A ?

I believe this type of urethane elastomer (flexible urethane casting resin) is what they use for making concrete molds and stamps. It is typically not used for casting. It may not hold up real well. It also may not cast very well in this small section. Normally it is probably poured by the gallon to make big molds. They give you a lot of time to allow the air to release prior to curing. I'd highly recommend a mild post cure to help it along in the cure process especially if your baits are small.

I'd also recommend adding the dye when you start mixing. I would not preload the dye into the polyol side unless you know for certain the dye you are using is compatible and contains NO MOISTURE.

Thank you,Mike !!!

I was thinking of using the product to make the tail of the Whopper Plopper (I repeat here in Italy I can not find the Flex 80).
Can fit this product? Otherwise, what product (except Flex 80) advise me to use?

I would search for a flexible casting resin in your country. Perhaps look for and industrial supply house that sells tooling resins.

Thank you, Mike !!!

I found a casting polyurethane elastomer and is produced in 70 shore and 90 shore .
Which one should I use 70 shore or 90 shore to make the tail of the whoppe plopper?

We used an 80A ... I would suggest looking at the thickness of your tail and making a determination based on thickness. If your tail is thinner than the Whopper Plopper, I'd suggest going with the 90. If your tail is thicker, I'd recommend the 70. Thickness plays a big role into how the material flexes. A 1/4" thick 70A will feel stiffer than a 1/8" thick 90A due to the thickness. So consider the thickness of your design before deciding.

Thank you, Mike !!!
The thickness of the tail is the same as the whopper plopper. So I use the 70A or 90A ?

I'd probably go with the 70A. The 90A starts getting pretty stiff.

Thank you,Mike !!!

but is it true that if one combines/mixes a rubber (the same type and same brand) of 70 shore with a 90 shore you get rubber of 80 shore?
( 70 + 90 = 160 : 2 = 80 )

Yes it can be ... BUT ... check with the manufacturer to make sure the 70 and 90 are compatible. Sometimes they are not brother/sister products and are in fact different. Also sometimes the 90 over powers the 70 so you may need 75% of the 70 and 25% of the 90.

OK, Mike.

Rubbers that I would mix are the same brand and same type (only changes the Shore: one is 70 and 90), so there are no compatibility issues. The result should be a rubber 78/83 shore.
Otherwise I directly use 70 shore to make the tail (although I discovered that there are Italian companies that produce rubbers of 80 and 85 shore).
