Questions about Making Your Own Lures

Color pink soft plastic?

Postby eriksat1 » Tue Mar 13, 2012 12:11 pm

2 questions.
I want to make some soft plastic crappie baits in the color pink, what colors dye do I use to make the color pink?
And If I want to make a copy (mold)of another soft plastic is that powder release ok or should I use the spray? What I am trying to do is make some of my own small plastic for crappie jigs, it seems the bait stores are always out of the pink ones I like. So what I'm trying to do is make a mold out of a soft plastic already, is that hard to do?

Pink is a shade of red. Mix with white to get pink.

I guess you can tell it's been a long time since I was in art class, white+red=pink

What about making a mold using a existing plastic worm as an example? will it stick to the silicone mold bad? Or do I need to try and make the mold from a piece of clay?

Hi i don't think it will but you can spray the worm with some mold release spray just to make sure.. or put a few drops of silicone oil in a zip lock bag and spread it on the worm that should work.

Silicone only sticks to silicone, so you can re-melt existing worms and pour them into silicone molds without issue.

Making a mold of an existing worm is not a problem. I would not recommend putting silicone oil on it as anglinarcher wrote ... silicone only sticks to another silicone ... so the silicone oil will actually act as a primer and promote adhesion.

If you watch the video Larry and I put together making molds of some swimbaits, it'll walk you through the process pretty well.

Simply use our White dye and Red dye in Alumisol to make your pink lures.

I'm very sorry if I said to coat with silicone oil.

That would be stupid. Someone else said to use mold release. But that would not be necessary.

My bad and apologies anglinarcher. I meant to quote you saying ... "silicone only sticks to another silicone" as you wrote in your post and did not mean to imply that you wrote to coat it with silicone oil. When I reread how I typed it, obviously missing some need punctuation, it sounded exactly as you read it.

My bad ... bottom line ... don't use anything silicone based as a mold release when pouring liquid silicone rtv as it will promote adhesion.

No problems. I have been under stress lately and have been making far too many mistakes. I assumed it was me.

I suspect the box was porous. The ETC fills every detail so it soaked into the wood.
