For durability and simplicity and ease of maintenance I don't think anything is better than the Penns. I use a Slammer 560 because it's supposed to be more braid friendly than the older designs, and I find that it's OK but marginal for braid. I think they make a Slammer in 850 size. The Daiwa will probably cast farther and be more braid friendly.

I debated getting the Emblem or the Penn and picked the Penn because my other Penns have been very durable and reliable and with great longevity. My experiences with Daiwa were about the same as with reels from other price point companies where I've ended up having to replace them after three years. The Emblem may be better than that, but I wasn't going to risk it.

In my case, I'm willing to revert to monofilament if the braid doesn't work out, so if you're determined to use braid, my gut feel is that the Daiwa will be a better design.

I've got a Diawa Emblem X 6000T that is one of my go to reels for surf fishing - great reel - I usually couple it with my 11' Tica rod (fast action - 3 - 8 oz) it will cast a country mile, I've had it since 2002 or 2003 (don't exactly remember) - it is rugged and tough - I've even got an older Diawa Jupiter 5500 that still gets some use as a back up - no complaints with Diawa - overall good surf casting equipment -

My absolute favorite surf reels are my Mitchell Nautil 7500's - these are almost totally bomb proof - really hardy reels - they hold up to the sand and salt extremely well. Cast well with my rods, out muscles the fish. Caught some nice red drum with them.

I'm a mono user myself - don't really use much braid - I normally fill my spools with 15lb to 25 lb mono and then attach a 30lb to 50 lb fluorocarbon shock leader (usually about 15' to 20') via an albright special.
