I've got a Diawa Emblem X 6000T that is one of my go to reels for surf fishing - great reel - I usually couple it with my 11' Tica rod (fast action - 3 - 8 oz) it will cast a country mile, I've had it since 2002 or 2003 (don't exactly remember) - it is rugged and tough - I've even got an older Diawa Jupiter 5500 that still gets some use as a back up - no complaints with Diawa - overall good surf casting equipment -
My absolute favorite surf reels are my Mitchell Nautil 7500's - these are almost totally bomb proof - really hardy reels - they hold up to the sand and salt extremely well. Cast well with my rods, out muscles the fish. Caught some nice red drum with them.
I'm a mono user myself - don't really use much braid - I normally fill my spools with 15lb to 25 lb mono and then attach a 30lb to 50 lb fluorocarbon shock leader (usually about 15' to 20') via an albright special.
