Fly leader question

Hello:

I've got leader spools of 30 pound, 20 pound, 15 pound, 8, and 4 pound fluorocarbon on hand it it occurred to me that I should be using the material for making my own fly leaders. I found one formula that a saltwater guide favors for his fly rods: 6 feet of 30#, 2 feet of 20# and 2 feet of 15#. Sounds simple enough.

My question is, do you add a tippet to that, or do you just replace the 15# section when it gets too short? Any insight will be appreciated.

I've seen similar formulas and am never sure whether they are intended to describe the total leader, or whether a tippet should be added in addition to the leader described in the formula.

Thanks!

Have you tried twisted leaders as seen on strippingguards.com?
