Shimano Trinidad 14 or 16

Postby BJNestor » Tue Nov 16, 2010 10:27 pm

Larry,
I keep going back and forth on which Trinidad (14 or 16) to pick up. The 14 is nice, small and light weight, and can still pull in a 15-20lb fish. The 16 has a better drag (22lbs), but it's a little heavier. What would you recommend?

Would upgrading the drag on a 14 make a difference? Do upgraded drags work?

I'm a West Coast rail fisherman, mainly going on 1.5 day trips. I have a Torium 14 (love it) & 30, but need something in between and I'm hoping the Trinidad 14 could handle that (20-25lbs).

Let me know what you think.

Brian,

The new Trinidad A reels already have a better drag system when compared to the gold Trinidad. We rate our drag to one finger tight ont he star. Obviously you can crank the star down further and get a little more pressure out of it. The 14 is more than sufficient to catch anything you are going to get on a 1 1/2 day trip. A 16 is a good choice if you plan to fish 30-40 pound. I am a surface iron guy so I use the 20 with 40#. I have caught many larger model yellowtail, albacore, bluefin and yellowfin on the 14. Just spool it with some 50# Power Pro and use a 25 pound leader.

Thanks Bantam1; I'm sure I'll be happy either way, but I'm going to pull the trigger on the 14.
