Shark size and weights

Postby SharkBite » Fri Apr 16, 2010 7:13 pm

Going to FL Atlantic coast side and will be going shark fishing. The charter I talked to said the sharks are about 4' long.
Two questions
#1 how much are they going to weigh?
#2 do you think a 12wt fly blank built as a baitcaster is going to handle the sharks?

hi s
A 4 foot shark is pretty tiny! My guess is around 40 lbs. tops, although I've never actually put one on a scale.
A 10 weight fly blank will handle them with no problem.
have fun!

That's surprising that a Florida guide would tell you the sharks average only 4 foot. Did he mention which species you'd be catching or how you would be targeting them? I've watched people catch large Lemons, Bulls, Hammerheads, and Blacktips on TV in Florida waters and from what I've seen they have some size on them.

In my home waters we have large Bull Sharks up to 8 ft in the bay systems that will harass you and steal speckled trout and redfish right off your line. I've caught a few myself and believe me fighting a 400+ lb shark is something you won't soon forget.
