Shimano Tiagra T20A vs Penn International 16VS

Postby love to fish » Thu Jan 21, 2010 1:22 pm

Larry, this summer I am going on a long range tuna trip out of San Diego. The targeted species will be Yellow tail and Yellow fin. The Yellow fin should top out not much larger than 100 lbs. I fish almost exclusivley with Shimano reels. My question: Which type of reel of the two mentioned Shimano T20A ro the Penn International 16VS would you suggest for this trip and Why.

Thank you very much.

Hi C
As you might suspect, I am a bit biased, but I think rightly so. Performance, reliability and good service if needed are at the top of my list when it comes to choosing any and all tackle. Shimano is tops in those categories.
best,
L

I would suggest looking at the Talica 16II as another option. You can fish the same line on a much smaller reel. Load it up with 500 yards of 65# Power Pro and use a 60-100 pound leader. We caught several 100-130 pound yellowfin on this reel during testing.
