Losing Tackle In The Kelp

Postby YakMan » Sun May 31, 2009 11:44 am

while kayak fishing for lings, reds and other rockfish I seem to be losing more of my larger swimbaits in the kelp. (thanks for the lure making episode Larry - This should reduce my costs in the future - can't wait to make some of those sliding jigs)
- with 7" swimbaits i'm using a 4" jig head on a 5'6" medium heavy rod w/ 20lb test.
- with 5" or smaller plastics i'm using a 2 oz jig head on a 6'6" bass pole - light spinning reel with 10lb test

It seems I lose more of the 4 oz jigs than 2 oz jigs after they get snagged

does it make any sense that I feel the snag sooner with the lighter rod and therefore am able to back track and get the 2 oz jigs out of there? or is it simply the added weight and larger hook on the 4 oz jigs snagging deeper into the kelp?

not sure if there is an exact answer but any help appreciated

Hi Yak
I'd say number 2. Suggest going to 50lb braid.
best,
