alvey reels line twist

Postby curtisballardsr » Wed May 06, 2009 11:25 am

i have an alvey reel and custom built to specs. 12 ft rod for surffishing. i love the distance and balance of the combo, but have had horrible line twist problems. i have tried multiple types and numbers of swivels, but the problem continues. i have been using 30lb mono, would a braid or superline be a better choice.

Hi C
I'm looking at an Alvey that's sits on a shelf in my office right now.
sorry to say, but it's the nature of the beast. Twist is part of the design due to the fact line falls off the end of the spool when you cast but gets cranked in in a revolving fashion. Braid would likely be even worse than the mono.
best,

A stiff mono is the best solution for Alvey reels and their inherent line twist
But the only way to deal with it fully is the following:

1) Always and only use a ball bearing swivel on every single rig (sampo are good) - they are expensive but worth it
2) At the end of every session rig your line so only a sinker/weight/leger attachs directly to your swivel - cast it as far as you can and retrieve with moderate pressure pinching the line netween your fingers

these won't eliminate twist but will minimise it
