GOOD TARPON REELS OR NOT

Postby DAVID J SEIWERT » Sat Mar 28, 2009 6:23 pm

LARRY I HAVE AN OKUMA ABF 90- IT HOLDS A LOT OF LINE. IT IS BRAND NEW. I HAVE ALWAYS USED SHIMANO BAITRUNNERS EITHER 4500 OR 6500 WHICH ARE GREAT. THE OKUMA HOLDS MORE LINE THAN THE 6500. WITH 30LB POWER PRO WILL IT BE AS GOOD AS A SHIMANO? IT IS MUCH CHEAPER. ALSO CAN THE DAIWA DF 100A HANDLE BIG TARPON 150+ LBS. IT IS ANOTHER VERY INEXPENSIVE REEL. YEARS AGO I ALWAYS USED DAIWA BG'S BUT HAVE FOUND THAT SHIMANO'S ARE BETTER FOR TARPON. THANKS

Hi D
I've not used the two other reels you refer to, but it would be hard to beat the price/performance of the 6500 baitrunner.
I've seen lots of reels toasted by tarpon and would be hesitant to tackle them with bargain priced equipment, but I guess you really never know until you try.
best,
