Ling Cod Fishing

Larry,
Every year we go on a ling cod fishing tournament on the west coast right near monterey. I was wondering what lures you could suggest to catch the big fish. The deepest we fish is about 100 feet.

Hi K
I'd make a giant beetle spin with a flashabou tail. Experiment with blade size, shape and weight of lead head. Also suggest trying glow in the dark flashabou, or glow in the dark paint on head and or blade.
Big bait, big fish when it comes to lings.
best,
L

Awesome advise Larry. I use big Swimbaits 8-12in long. Storm has some big heavy swimbaits for a good price. I also use heavy Grouper style jig heads rigged with spinner blades. As far as baits go there is a wide veriety to use. My favorite ones are sand dabs, big mackerel, and if you live near Monterey try and catch some Humboldt squid durring the winter and use the tentacles. Like Larry mentioned, think big when it comes to lings. I've seen them with other lingcod in their mouth of equal size. They are not shy and will eat just about anything put in front of their mouth.
