Hi F
Please, call me Larry! You pose a very good question.
Anti-reverse fly reels were designed for fish that make long, lightning fast runs. When a really big tarpon or billfish blasts off on it's initial run the handle on the fly does some serious rpm's. It can feel like you're got a runaway buzz saw in your hand with no guard on the the blade! Stick your fingers in the wrong place and you might not play the piano again.
Conversely, until you get used to them, it's a little harder to tell what's going on with the fish because the drags can be so smooth you may not know if line is going out or if it's coming in while you're cranking.
If you're fishing tarpon and billfish, they may have some application for you, otherwise I prefer a standard design with a large diameter spool.
hope this helps,
best,
L
