one rod/reel for tarpon and sails?

Postby rwalkerdds » Tue Dec 09, 2008 9:30 pm

Larry, last fall I went to Silverking Lodge in Costa Rica to tame some tarpon. Recently I went to Cabo and got into some striped marlin. Both experiences were awesome but would have been significantly better with the right rod/reel setup.
My next trip may be for sails in Guatamala or Costa Rica.
I am considering purchasing a Shimano Torsa 16 with a Shimano Trevala 6'6" Med (30-80) rod. For line I plan on outfitting it with 50 lb braid and running a mono or fluoro leader. Is this a good set-up? Will it cast small tarpon jigs and hold enough line to land a big striped marlin? I've seen you use something similar for giant catfish and big black marlin.
Thanks in advance,
Rich

Hi R
The Torsa 16 and Trevala rod rigged as you describe will work great for the species you mention. Light jigs will be difficult to cast any distance with any reel that has the fish whipping capabilities of a Torsa.
best,
