Whats your technique?

Postby rbfishing » Wed Nov 05, 2008 11:49 am

Hey Larry i'm a newbie and I realise that you prefer fishing with baitcasters as opposed to spinners. What I would like to know is what technique do you use when fishing livebait for GTs with spinners (not baitrunner models) and a fish takes the bait. Do you set your drag very light so they could run with no tension and have time to swallow big baits or do you open the bail. Also when do yu know when its time to set the hook. I have lost a couple due to setting the hook too early . thanks

Hi RB
Bridle you bait and use a circle hook. When the fish runs and is heading straight away, point your tip at the fish and apply about 3 pounds of steady pressure.
YOu can either fish with an open bail and manually engage it at the right time, or with a loose drag and apply hook setting pressure by showing the spool with your fingers. Be careful not to get your digits tangled in the line or you may never play the piano.
best
