Shark Fishing

Postby Big Game Fisherman » Thu Jul 03, 2008 1:20 pm

I'm fishing off a private pier in the Gulf of Mexico and have caught big bull sharks in the past and my Penn Senator has about had it. I would like to know what new reel, line, rod and hooks should I use. I have also used big Blue Runners as bait and would like to know what you recommend to use as bait.

I use ladyfish, mullet, jacks, and even big threadfin. Cut or live, but
mostly cutbait. I get quite a few blacktips in Tampabay with a bull
thrown it at times. Since I fish from a boat my gear isn't that heavy.
50-65lb braid with a 4-6ft steel leader on jigging rods, spinning and
conventional.

I use an Ambassadeur 9000 with a rod set up for 8 ounce baits. Line is 30# Trilene XL green fluorescent with a bimini. Terminal tackle is a "tarpon rig" with seven feet of single strand wire and a 7/0 hook. Favorite bait by far is ladyfish. It's light for sharks over about 7 feet, but up to that it's fine.
