Rod rec

Postby RhettWheeler » Sat Apr 15, 2017 5:30 am

Hey need recommendations on a good inshore rod that can handle some abuse. Anything in the 7'-8' range. Needs to be able to handle fish up to 40 pounds in heavy current.

We have a spot with very heavy tide- striped bass up to 40"+ and blues up to 13#. We have to use 60# braid and 100# fluoro to combat the bluefish bite offs. I've thought about surf rods but we night fish this spot so big rods lead to trouble on a small skiff.

If you are looking for a good value, Penn's Rampage jigging sticks are a good choice. They're short, light, and very stout. I picked up a couple of them for the War Department for trolling for poons in Brazos Santiago Pass because she doesn't like conventional gear. They worked well for bottom bouncing crabs for big reds around the B-S jetties, as well. They are a lot less expensive than the Shimaon jigging rods (MSRP $79.95) and come up to 130 pound class (RAMJIG80130S60). They're short (the one mentioned is 6'0), so they are perfect for small boats. They might be just what you need

Sorry, Larry. I didn't mean to hijack, but I thought I could help.

Bigger swimbaits up to 5oz- 10" eel type soft plastics- and occasionally switch out to topwaters when the timing is right.

The TFO two piece 8 footer in either 2 or three power should be perfect for what you are looking for. Not sure when the spin versions will be available for shipping. I used them last wk in Trinidad and they were spectacular.

Glad you got some time out. I looked at the prices and the guide prices are pretty reasonable there...... but I suppose like most it is the trip and accommodations that get ya. LOL

Hope the fishing was Awesome.

Used Larrys TFO spinning rods in Maldives for GTs in power #2,3, and 4. All were great. I would go with #3 when they become available. Great rods and you can cast a mile with them!
