Preference of rod...

Postby Gaebler20 » Sat Dec 12, 2015 8:49 pm

Larry, what rod do you think would work well for big game fish(triple digit fish, shark, grouper, tuna)? Would you prefer a rod with roller guides or regular eyes would work fine? Got a penn 50 size reel for offshore rig fishing, but debating on a rod...but not looking to spend 3 to 5 hundred for a big tuna stick...

Absolutely no need for the roller guides. best stick depends on what kind of fishing you are doing. trolling, live baiting etc. agreed, no need to spend big money.

Thanks larry...

Most of what I'll be doing is either bottom fishing, pitching cut bait around the rigs, and surf fishing for sharks...

Not sure if any one rod will do it all. For bottom fishing I like short and stout, which does not do well in any presentations other than trolling or dropping straight down.
The tuna type standup rods in the 52-66" range are great for that.
For pitching bait I'd want something a bit longer, and depending on how far the bait needs to be from shore and what means you have to get it there will depend on what works best in the surf.

Mainly, I paddle the bait out in a kayak or if I'm lucky enough, take it out on a jetski...if I'm pitching the bait near the rigs, I'm mainly trying to do what you did for yellowfins in LA...if I see a nice shark under the boat, I'll try to pitch it out a little from the boat...anything around probably 100lbs. or less, I'll use my musky rods...going back in april, hope to run into some tarpon again...

check out the blank I designed for mudhole. I think it's around 100 dollars. ought to be able to build it for $150 or so.

have to ask them. it's pretty easy to do. I made my first one from a kit I got out of the Herter's catalog when I was eleven years old!
I like setting it up with a six to eight inch butt max, and use a butt bucket type harness and run the gimbal belt down near my knees.

If you buy a kit from Mudhole, they'll include the 101 DVD on how to build out your rod (and several versions of written instructions too). They also have hundreds of videos on YouTube, if you ever get stuck. The hardest part, I've found, is getting the time and peace to sit down and build one out.

It's hard to buy a factory rod after building that first one...

Happy Holidays everyone!
