Tarpon fly reel drag setting??

Postby detroitmuskie » Sat Mar 21, 2015 9:09 am

Larry or any other seasoned Tarpon Fly Angler.....

What is the preferred drag setting on very big Tarpon with a fly reel? After the strip set and on initial strike/runs/jumps how tight should drag be on a fly reel using a F/I line, 12 ft leader with 80# shock...I know there's no exact amount but what is a general rule of thumb for hooking and keeping fish pinned in the first few minutes of chaos?? Obviously after the first wave of chaos I can tighten down a bit and put some heat on them...

Thoughts anyone?? Thanks!

If you are using IGFA 20# class most guys I know go about 3 pounds to begin with and go by feel after that. You want to test it with backing exposed and all the line out. The initial run will peel the fly line off very quickly, greatly reducing the diameter of the spool which causes a significant increase in drag.
