Fishing in South Florida

Postby miamicanes927 » Tue Mar 18, 2008 10:48 am

I am new to Saltwater and before was a lot of bass fishing. I just bought some new rods and reels and a friend of mine told me I bought rods and reels that are not going to hold up at all. I bought 2 TLD 25's w/ 40 lb mono and 2 Shimano 6500 bait runner's with 20 lb mono. Is this good for most South Floridian fishes like dolphin, kingfish, maybe even some sailfish??

Those are more than enough. That TLD has 450 yards of line and the baitrunner has about 270 yards. Larry caught sail fish with a calcutta 50 which holds 130 yards of 8. I would not worry about catching the fish you listed. I bet Larry is going to to tell you they are over kill, but that from his perspective, and he is a much more skilled fisherman than most of us.

HI M,
I think you'll be just fine unless you decide to fish for swordfish!
I've run 80 on tld 25's, although it's not recommended.
have fun,

If you are in Miami, you should also hit the Tarpon in Gov. Cut. The
gear you have is way more than enough. A 4500 baitrunner is good for
tarpon a 6500 shouldn't break a sweat. The TLD you can also use for
bottom fishing grouper and others.

P.S. If you on the east coast you're lucky in the sailfish department.
Just when everything is going your way, something breaks!!!
