Question about knots for heavy mono

Postby Questor » Wed Mar 05, 2008 1:59 pm

Hello:

I will be using 100# fluorocarbon for leaders in the Gulf of Mexico this summer and this is a material I have not used before. I have a few questions:

1) Does fluorocarbon need to be boiled and stretched like heavy mono to unkink it and straighten it?

2) What knot should I use to attach a 100# fluoro leader to a bimini tied with 30# mono?

3) What knot should I use to attach the heavy fluoro to a swivel eye or hook eye?

The stuff is so heavy my usual knots are going to be problematic.

Thank you for your time. I appreciate it.

Q The knot I use is called a Boca Grande knot. It works on 100# line
for tying to your terminal end. I use an Albright to attach leader to
line. It seem to woork well. I have switched to 80 now for Tarpon
and don't really have a problem with break offs.

A homer rhodes knot to the fly and a slim beauty to the class tippet.

Hi Q
Either use a double nail, or try melting one end of the shock leader to make a bulge, then tying a nail knot with the bimini treating the two lines as one, butting it up against the bulge.
I use a 3 shoulded nail knot or uni to the fly. I can tie it with 600# marlin leader.
stretch the line.
best,
