Terez Rod for the Tranx

Postby waxwingangler » Mon Jan 30, 2012 9:47 pm

L-
I have watched your you-tube video a dozen times and have not been able to figure out what rod you were using with the Tranx. The rod I have picked to purchase is an 8' MH Fast sardine/squider slider rated for 40-80lb line for casting the senior size waxwings. Am I on the right track?
If not, what were you using and or what would you recommend.

Thanks,
WWA...

hi W
I used one of the captains rods, who had about 40 brand new ones. I picked the longest, stiffest ones which were eight footers. I think I had one heavy and one MH. I personally preferred the heavy one for long bomber casts with the larger lures.

Thanks L-
I will go with the 8' MH for versatillity. I'll be throwing Junior and Senior size wings.
last question on this topic... How long was your leader and were you using a Mono or Flouro?
I was using Yozuri 40lb pink flouro but that was a bit stiff and a deterant for line shy fish. I've
gone the extra dollar and started using Tatsu 20lb flouro with much better results. Everything I've
read lately though has recommended Mono leaders. Im confused here...I thought abbrasion resistance
was more important than stretch in salt water applications.

Thanks again

The smaller waxwing actually has more action when you use no leader. Larry may have found something different.

Bantam1-
In the video they do show two different lure styles.
One was a chartreuse senior waxwing, the other looked
like it was or couldve been a wide glide. In either case they
were at least 2oz lures.

As for the smaller waxwing, what size were you refering to?
A loop knot will affectively allow more action on most lures
with mono or flouro and hold up on big fish. I personally like
the boy & jr sizes.

Whats your opinion on Mono vs Flouro?

Fluoro, if it's good, seems to have better abrasion resistance than mono. I like that, and I like it's lack of stretch for certain things too. I've had a few situations with live bait and tuna where it made a difference in getting bites.
I use plain old "hard" mono, when I can find it, most of the time when it calls for a nylon shocker.

The 88 and 118 sizes are what I was talking about. I know all of them will swim better with no leader or a very short leader. I know a few people that had to use a short leader to help get bites offshore for tuna and some other species.

Thanks L-
Im sure you may have tried the Tatsu, but in case you havent, I think you will be happy if you did.
For me the kicker was the break strength, low memory, and its diamiter seems to be smaller than most.
Its pricey, but Tatsu has officially replaced my 40lb Yozuri .

Thanks again L...

Bantam1-
We are referencing the same sizes: 88 is the Boy 118 is the Jr.
What colors were they using for Tuna and how far out were they?
I have the sardine, bunker, and bone in the Senior size. I also have those colors in the Jr
along with black/gold, mackerel, purple, and chartreuse.

The baitfish colors and bone have been solid for several species. It depends on the day, light conditions, water conditions, forage... I paint my own colors so I can't say which one I like best. I have my inshore colors and offshore colors that work very well for me where I am fishing.

Thanks B1-
Im limited in getting to the coast often, maybe a few times a year. I have 3 trips to the Keys coming up with 3 days to fish each trip.
This year I intend to hit it all. Bays, back country flats, reefs/wrecks, and some fresh water bass fishing. Normally I hit the reef/wrecks for
Yellow Tails and Mangrove Snapper. This year Im trying to catch everything in the larger species catagories. Maybe Ill be fortunate enough to
post some nice pics from this first trip.

Any place you can recommend me to hunt for big fish?

Larry will be better suited to give you tips on where to go. I have not fished FL. I am based in CA so I fish the Pacific. I target Calico Bass and Yellowtail locally. I'll play around with the tuna if/when they show up.

You can run into something big from one end of the keys to the other! When what where depends on season of course. Any of the established marinas can give you great info on times, captains, lodging options etc. I always liked fishing out of marathon because it was in the middle and could trailer to key west or islamorada.

L-
Most of my past experience fishing in the Keys is from a
party boat in Key Largo or Isla Morada. This season Im going
guided. Looking to hit the back country and jig over the reefs.
My idea was to start at Marathon and fish my way to the Tortgas.
Hopefully Ill have some cool pics to share.

Terez Rod for the Tranx

Postby Olivio » Tue May 29, 2012 9:49 am

I prefer to put up pics rather than links but I have been fussed at for the size of them, resizing or doing fancy stuff isnt something I have the time to do right now, so links will have to do.
So what do you think of my rigging?
