musky leaders

Postby dan » Sun Mar 20, 2011 8:54 pm

Hey larry, what do you think about 100# test fluorocarbon leaders for musky and pike. My concern is that steel leaders will hamper the action of my lures, but on the other hand I don't want to lose fish from bite offs either, whats your opinion. Thanks for your time, and I love your show. best wishes, Dan

I guide extensivly for muskies and in my experience 100Lb is too light. When Flouro first came onto the muskie scene there were a number of companies making 80 and 100lb leaders and bite offs were not uncommon especially when casting. Upgrading to material at least 130lb test seems to be the magic number. I have used 130-150 for at least 8 seasons with 500 plus fish caught with no failures so I think/know you are good to go using 130 or higher.

What leaders do the rest of you guys use for gliders and WTD's? Ive used single strand wire inthe past but tied one out of 130 LB flouro with just a welded ring on the front and will connect the bait with a split ring. I'm thinking it is very light and should work well. Any drawbacks that you can think of?

As long as we are on the topic I have a question. Does anyone know if you can tie 100-130# flouro straight to 65-80# PP? If so what knot? I have a feeling that if its possible, the double uni probably wouldnt be the knot to use. The reason I ask is I like to take my walleye buddies night fishing for muskies and it seems like they are always reeling the leaders right up into the eyelets because of poor visibility. And I know that just a knot would be a lot mot gentle on the eyelets. Thanks for any advise.

FWIW, I regularly tie it directly to either 50# or 65# pp with a dbl line (e.g., Bimini) using an Albright knot with a 3 shoulder clinch in the pp after the Albright is complete (this knot is in the booklet that comes with the pp) or a uni to uni (again with the Bimini in the pp). I have not had either of these knots fail.

Collin,

You can use a vertical jigging's knot ( FG Knot for example works good)

Larry talked about a knot, a knot that is also known as the Sebile Knot, when I saw him last. Check it out on YouTube.

It is the perfect knot for what you need.

I checked out YouTube for the FG and the Sebile knot. Both are shown, actually many versions of each are shown, each claiming to be the FG or the Sebile knot.

I am not so sure they are the same knot, but I think that they do the same thing. I am going to try each and see if I prefer the FG to the Sebile. The FG seems easier to tie to me, but the Sebile seems to take less work to get the same result.

Hmmmmm, got to check this out.

I quite agree, properly tighten during tying.
