Hi R
I'd say either an 8 or a 10. It depends on the largest average fly you are planning to cast, and how heavy the cover is where you will be fishing.
best,

I've personaly fallen in love with the fast action "short" rods that are being made out there lately. I like how they can help turn over larger bugs even against the wind. I've been using an 8 wt. for the past 15 or so years and have owned several. Where I live a basss larger than 5 lbs is extremely rare and those wieght rods have had enough backbone to hull those fish from heavy cover of all types as long as I reacted quickly enough.

Some folks swear by 10wts for pike/musky but you really only need one if you want to toss some of the crazy huge streamers they use or fishing in very windy conditions will they be that much more helpful.

In the end match the rod to the bugs you want to cast then consider conditions like cover.
