frog reel

Postby jitterbug » Sun Aug 22, 2010 5:10 pm

I've stripped out the gears on a few "performance" reels pulling bass from the slop. It requires a lot of torque. I'm bass fishing with a Spro frog on 65# braid. I thought I'd ask the "Poppa Grande" of extreme fishing what he would use.

thanks,
JB

I use the Calais 200DC. I know it is expensive but it is THE best frog reel I have ever used.

Hi JB
I'd suggest the Curado 200 or 300 teamed up with the stiffest stick you can still toss the frog with.
best,

Thanks for the input. The Calais would be hard to get thru "purchasing", but the Curado I could swing. Much appreciated.

Definitely with Larry on this one. I've used the Shimano baitcasters for about 10 years. The 200/300 series (E series or previous) have done the job at a relatively lower cost for me. Heck even the Japanese imports and the 100 series have just been great. I've had my 300e doing Saltwater pulling in big blues this year for example. Pretty sure anything you would but that reel to in freshwater would be successful, I.E. if you fail it would not be the fault of the "winch". I have looked upwards into the Shimano BC line, but just doesn't make sense to me having used the Curado series for a good while. And the factory warranty/reel service has been absolutely excellent on all the Shimano BC's I've sent in for repair or routine.

reel for frogs

Postby tileguy » Tue Oct 26, 2010 7:40 pm

I have seven Garcia 4600 C4"s and use them for everything other than throwing shaky heads. All are spooled with suffix braid of various weights and colors. I use red 50lb for my frog rod, a Loomis Mb843. If you can"t drag a bass out of the slop with this outfit please tell me where you are fishing. I want to go there.
