Fly fishing for Minnesota gar?

Mr. Dahlberg:

I've seen dead gar on the shore of Lake St. Croix near Stillwater. I think they're shortnose gar, about a foot to 18 inches long. Of course my immediate reaction was "how do I catch one of those?" Is there a way of catching them on a fly? Where in the water should I look for them?

Thanks, and happy new year to you and your family.

Hi Q,
I've never targeted gar with a fly, but have caught a few by accident while fishing largemouth in Florida. They bit on 4" long streamers made of flashabou.
In the river I'd look in slack water adjacent to current where small minnows might bunch up. They're usually found high in the water column, especially during inclining temps.
Good luck,
L

is below a small dam as good a spot for gar as it is for about every other type of fish?
