The Hunt For Big Fish with Larry Dahlberg

Dear Larry,
New member, old admirer. Great show, love the locations.

I fish for big flatheads in snaggy medium sized rivers. I really like braid/superline for it's small diameter (less water resistance), and especially lack of memory coming off the reel (BIG factor when you need 50# line & up). I've been worried about abrasion, though, so I've been attaching a 6' "shock" leader of 60# Ande mono to my Power Pro with an improved Albright knot.
Is there a better way? Looking at that knot makes me nervous.

Hi t,
I'd be a little nervous with that knot too. Try tying a bimini in the braid and connecting to your leader with a double nail (uni) knot.

OK, I got that to work, and I like it- though it will be a pain to tie in the dark on the river!
Is what I'm doing neccessary, or am I too concerned about the superline fraying?

Hi T,
If there's any chance of rock or metal doing a see saw across the line you're better off with heavy mono. I use at least 80, and soften 130-200 for the leader.
I think it's "cheap insurance" that pays off when you really need it.
