Crankbait color

Postby kj197728 » Wed Dec 06, 2006 10:39 pm

I would like to find out if anyone knows about the white with red head crankbaits companies produce.

What is this color suppose to represent in the water while fishing for something like muskies?

Any specific baitfish or species?

The only thing I have ever heard is that it is an injured baitfish moving through the water. Thanks for all of the help.

hi kj,
not all lures are designed to imitate specific fish. The color red underwater has a very short wavelength and appears black within a few feet.
Far more important than a lure's color are speed, depth and exactly where you are fishing it.
Also it's important to remember that large predators also have a role in "natural selection", meaning part of their job is to eat things that appear as though they do not belong there, which may in part help explain why they often bite things that don't make sense to us.
In addition, all fish are born "samplers". They try all kinds of stuff, remembering which produced positive or negative rewards. If you show something to a fish that exhibits cues similar to items a fish has sampled successfully in the past, there is a good likelyhood he'll take a nip at it to see if it's a potential menu item.
best,
