Go-to flies for largemouth

Postby drabo2000 » Wed Aug 13, 2008 4:25 pm

Hi Larry,

I really enjoyed your DVD on fly fishing for panfish and bass. Your tips
on fly casting were a real bonus - great stuff!

You showed how to tie a moonbeam diver on your DVD.
I am just getting started fly fishing for bass in the local lakes in San Diego.
I wonder if you would be so kind as to list 5 flies that you regard as
your go-to's for largemouth. What would be your 1 fly?

Thanks!
Steve

I like Dahlberg divers the best, color doesn't seem to matter. Size 3/0 hook is about right, and with a weed guard.

I"ve experimented with the various foam poppers and prefer them whenever feasible, but I just get better results with the deer hair models for this type of fly.

Deciever streamers in natural colors, EP baitfish in back country colors, Whitlock deer hair poppers, when I feel confident about my casting!

HI D
When fly fishing for LMB I use 99% topwater flies. Mostly the diver, in heavy cover I use something I call a slider, and when using super slow, long pause retrieves I usually use a popping bug.
I like using the fly that is easy to cast but make a nice loud pop when I pop it. Usually the heads are no larger than a nickel, being closer to a dime of penny in head dia.
If I'm fishing subsurface I use a streamer tied like a muddler but with a wing made of Flashabou mixed with a little marabou.
If conditions call for a bottom contact lure I pick up my baitcaster!
Glad you enjoyed the dvd.
best,
L

Hi L,
Im fishing for Pkok on fly down here in South Florida ..I want to try a surface popper. I looked at your pictures and could'nt tell what you make that popper head out of ? what is that? Oh one more thing I am also getting over run with little guys 8 -12 inches shall i just keep going larger on the fly? Im thinking about trying a sailfish tube fly

Lately Ive been having good luck using a Gurgler. Color doesnt seem to matter. Casts easily as long as the foam lip isnt to big.
