Muskie coloration or "phase" question.

Larry,

I was wondering if you had any insight on a muskie's coloration or "phase" as I've heard it called (whether they're clear, spotted, or barred). Is it random genetic variation? or is it influenced by habitat or diet? Also, can a muskie change coloration, say from barred to clear over their lifetime? Or if they're born with a coloration their stuck with it the rest of their life.

I only have access to stocked muskies here in Nebraska, but I've seen all three phases caught.

Thanks in advance!

Actually, there are several strains of muskies and each has it's own unique look. They vary a little within each strain, but not a great deal. Often very small fish will have more vivid markings.
