Whiggly question..

Postby Gaebler20 » Tue Aug 04, 2015 6:12 pm

Larry, do you think that whiggly will have better or worse action with a nylon coated steel wire rather than the steel wire it comes with? I have the nylon wire twice as long as the steel wire...or will it act the same regardless..?
And is it OK to remove the weights in the belly if I want to make it ride higher in the water or will it not work right??

Nylon coated should make no diff at all, length is no issue either. yes, remove balls to make it ride higher.

Well, the nylon wire didn't work...wire cut itself off by the hook...but, first time using whiggly...lost a 50, 2 mid 40's, caught a 31, 42, 43, and 49...all in only 6 hours of fishing...this is truly the greatest musky lure of all time...I've never even heard of this much action on one lure in one day...

If you join it correctly and it's sufficiently strong (45# min) nylon coated wire should work fine.
Sounds like you've got the program down other than that! Congrats on some great catches! What state? What type of retrieve are you using?

I'm just up the road from you on the St. Louis River...using a twitch and rip and jerk retrieve..couldn't really do anything else, since I don't have a high speed reel...

Great! That's what I do most of the time as well. If you turn the handle fast enough you can burn with just about any modern reel!
Glad to hear the river has recovered from the nasty flood.
Keep catchin' !

I tried burning it, but the problem I kept having is it kept rolling over..didn't matter if I had all the weights in the belly or not...tried a heavier hook and it still did it...what do you think the problem could've been??

Hard to say without seeing it, but it doesn't sound like you needed to burn it! BTW, if you got pics of any of your fish you should post them on my Facebook page.

I recently fished the first time with the Whiggley's and tried burning them in as well. The bait kept rolling over...it works great with a twitch/pause technique but when fish were high later in the day I wanted to burn it but it wasn't working. I was using a 7'6" Rod, Curado 301E and had a stay lock snap attached to the line and attached the leader directly to the snap. I love twitching it or working it like a Dawg but just can't burn it in without it constantly rolling. I want to use it like a bucktail and burn it in when fish are up...any suggestions?

Try "pinning" one of the treble points just under the skin. Just make sure it's straight.
