Really good Alligator Gar fishing spot

Postby KBK_T » Tue Aug 26, 2014 5:33 am

Hello!

My name is Krzysztof Kruszewski. I am angler from Poland, or more precisely sort of traveller angler as several times a year I try to visit different spots for fishing . As my sport roots are in deeply power based activities (I am self-defence/Krav Maga trainer and combat shooting instructor) I like fishing with high degree of physical involvement: bigger halibuts, tarpons, white sturgeons, catfish, bill fish etc. I just came back from Rio Parismina – my clearly favourite place for fishing – where Great Lady Judy Heidt recommended me to turn to You as to sort of “Ultimate Fishing Wisdom” as I had a question She was not sure how to answer :P ,

By some, known only for himself reasons, my Younger Son asked me to go together and try catch as big alligator gar as possible. So I have no other choice that to go … . As ads of fishing guides/agencies have always pretty substantial marketing bias. From this perspective, I dare to turn to You for advice. My question can be presented in following 4 points:
1. What is the best place to find really BIG Alligator Gar;
2. What is the best time in the year to go there;
3. What is the best fishing guide/company able to organise/assist me during this action;
4. How many days of stay I need to book to have rationally high chance to achieve my goal.
I have neither cost nor time constraints, I would like just to maximise chance of success. Many thanks for help and for Your so interesting/instructive web page.
Big hug from Poland,
Krzysztof Borys Kruszewski

Falcon Lake near Zapata, TX is filled with big alligator gar. They've been active all summer and starting to pick up some more right now. The resacas around Brownsville, Texas are full of gar, as is Delta Lake in the Mid Rio Grande Valley. So is the Arroyo Colorado in Harlingen/Rio Hondo.

CAL, I WAS BORN IN BROWNSVILLE AND GREW UP IN THE VALLEY. A PAN AM GRAD. I AGREE THERE ARE GAR ALL OVER THE SOUTH TEXAS AREA BUT THE CONCENTRATION OF LARGE GAR ARE MUCH MORE CATCHABLE IN THE TRINITY. THE RIO GRANDE RIVER WAS GREAT IN THE 50'S AND 60'S BUT LESS NOW.

The Rio Grande still has some good gar fishing just below Falcon Dam, especially around Casas Blancas, but not like it was. I won't argue about the Trinity. I've heard stories, but if you want to chase gar in a bathtub, then Delta Lake is the place to go.

Good to find another Valley Boy. If you're ever back down in God's Country, reach out to me. We'll go fishing.

Best guide on the Trinity for monster gar is without a doubt Kirk Kirkland. Many friends have fished with him and highly recommend him.
