The Hunt For Big Fish with Larry Dahlberg

Hi Larry,

I am going to Northern Saskatchewan in early September to fish for Lakers on the fly.We will be targeting them over shoals in less than 20 feet.It is my understanding that patterns up to 10 inches long with 1/0 to 4/0 hooks are used.

Have you had chance to do this?

Are there any patterns you can recommend please?

Yes, I have done that. In terms of fly patterns my experience for big trout is the bigger the fly the better. I've had best luck using full sinking lines, and large white dahlberg divers. In 20 feet of water I would use a leader of 6-9 feet.
Make long bomber cast. Let line sink to bottom. strip fly until it contacts bottom. stop, let rise a few feet and repeat. speed, erratic retrieve, bottom contact and size are key elements.
2/0-4/0 hooks are fine.

Larry is so right, but I prefer to use EP fiber, jointed swim fly style to keep the weight down but keep the fly size up. I also like to take black with a few strands of silver flash, Brown with a few strands of gold, and olive.
